The problem

Regulars still called and asked if a hinge was in the bin. New people landed on a three-page brochure — hours, a faded aisle photo, and “visit us on Huebner” — that could not sell a box of screws.

The family knew every drawer. The site did not. Pickup was a voicemail. After-hours customers went to a big box instead of waiting for morning.

The approach

Shopify for the catalog the counter already counted by hand. Pickup language that sounds like the person who still knows your name — not “your order is ready for fulfillment.”

Design keeps the wood, the handwritten tags, and the aisle light. Categories follow the aisles: fasteners, paint, garden, key desk. If it is not on the shelf, the page says wait or special-order.

What we made

A catalog that still feels like the counter.

  1. 01 Shopify catalog. Fasteners, paint, garden, and the odd bin a regular asks for by the old name. Photos from this floor, not a distributor pack.
  2. 02 Pickup that talks like the counter. “Ready at the counter after 2” instead of a warehouse status. Notes for a key cut or a paint match.
  3. 03 Hours and the Huebner map. When the family is there, and how to find the lot — not a pin in a strip they do not use.
  4. 04 Staff can add a bin. A Saturday special goes up from a phone without a developer standing in aisle four.

The result

A store you can order from before you drive Huebner. Regulars still call — they also send a pickup note at night. New people can find a hinge without guessing the aisle.

The counter still knows your name. The site finally knows the drawers.

If we have it in the bin, the site should say so before they drive Huebner.
